Wednesday 14 October Hertfordshire morning brief
Wednesday 14 October is a dry, mild day for Hertfordshire. The Met Office East of England forecast, updated at 07:59 BST, gives a chilly bright start, patchy cloud later, mostly light winds and a regional high of 18°C. The only planned train change found for this morning is on the Abbey line: London Northwestern is replacing the 05:51 Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey and the 06:09 return with buses. The Environment Agency flood feed for Hertfordshire returned no items.
Weather
The East of England forecast says: “A chilly and bright start to Wednesday, with any isolated mist or fog patches soon clearing. Becoming rather warm through the morning, with some patchy cloud developing during the afternoon. Winds remaining mostly light. Maximum temperature 18 °C.” Tonight stays dry after some clear spells, then mostly cloudy, with winds light at first and then breezy. Minimum temperature 11°C. That regional text was updated at 04:00 BST; the page itself was marked updated at 07:59 BST. The same page lists Welwyn Garden City at 17°C among its place figures, beside a regional maximum of 18°C.
Town pages opened alongside it:
- Watford, updated 6:06am on 14 October: Wednesday maximum 18°C, sunny intervals, feels like 16°C, a 10% chance of rain at 3pm, gusts up to 24mph. The day card gives an overnight minimum of 13°C.
- St Albans, updated 6:01pm on 13 October: the Wednesday 14 October card is a maximum of 18°C and an overnight minimum of 13°C. The Wednesday summary is sunny, feels like 16°C, rain chance under 5%, gusts up to 25mph.
- Welwyn, updated 10:35pm on 13 October: Wednesday maximum 19°C, overnight minimum 12°C, sunny, feels like 16°C, rain chance under 5%, gusts up to 25mph.
Thursday on the East of England page is mostly cloudy and rather warm, still dry, breezy at times, with a maximum of 21°C. Friday starts with rain that clears southeastwards, then sunny spells and showers, turning cooler and breezy into the weekend.
The UK warnings page showed one yellow warning for Wednesday: strong south to southwesterly winds from 10:00 to 19:00 BST for Highland and Na h-Eileanan Siar. It did not list Hertfordshire or the East of England. That page also said “We are experiencing issues. These warnings may be out of date.” The East of England forecast still describes winds in this region as mostly light. Check the warning page again if you are travelling outside the county.
The Environment Agency flood-monitoring feed for Hertfordshire returned an empty items list. More forecast links are on the weather page.
Trains
National Rail’s notice for Wednesday 14 October says engineering work closes all lines early between Watford Junction and St Albans Abbey. London Northwestern Railway is the operator. Two trains do not run:
- The 05:51 Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey. A bus leaves Watford Junction at 05:20, Watford North 05:25, Garston 05:35, Bricket Wood 05:46, How Wood 05:52, Park Street 05:58, and arrives at St Albans Abbey at 06:03.
- The 06:09 St Albans Abbey to Watford Junction. A bus leaves St Albans Abbey at 06:05, Park Street 06:11, How Wood 06:17, Bricket Wood 06:23, Garston 06:34, Watford North 06:44, and arrives at Watford Junction at 06:48.
National Rail says replacement vehicles may be busier than usual and to allow extra time. Pick-up points are on station signs.
Thameslink service updates listed no incidents. Overnight engineering via Redhill, from 23:59 Monday to Thursday until 05:50 the next morning, diverts trains so they cannot call at Redhill, with buses between Purley and Three Bridges via Horley and Gatwick. That is south of London. It is not a closure of St Albans, Harpenden, Hitchin or Stevenage. The 22:54 Luton to Sutton, Monday to Thursday, terminates at Wimbledon because of overnight work between Wimbledon and Sutton.
Station access still listed on that Thameslink page:
- Hertford North: lifts out of order between the entrance and platforms 2 and 3, affecting services to Stevenage and some Moorgate services.
- Stevenage: lifts out of order between platforms 1 and 2 and the footbridge since 15:16 on 8 October, affecting Great Northern, LNER and Lumo towards London Kings Cross and Thameslink towards Horsham and Brighton. All toilets at Stevenage are out of order.
- Letchworth Garden City: the accessible toilets on platform 2 are out of order.
A search of National Rail engineering notices did not turn up a Wednesday 14 October closure for Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin, Harpenden, Stevenage or Bishop’s Stortford. Later this weekend is different: Greater Anglia and Stansted Express have buses all weekend of 17–18 October between Waltham Cross and Hertford East / Stansted Airport, which does affect Hertford East and Bishop’s Stortford. That is Saturday and Sunday, not this morning. Live departures can still change, so check National Rail disruptions before you leave. Local source routes are on the travel page.
County notices
Hertfordshire County Council is asking where 20mph limits may be appropriate in Watford. The Let’s Talk Transport survey is open to people who live, work or visit Watford, and responses must be in by 23:59 on Sunday 18 October 2026. The page says a countywide YouGov survey found most people in favour of 20mph limits around schools and where people live, and that main roads such as Waterfields Way, Beechen Grove and Exchange Road should stay at their current limit. Enquiries go to 20mph@hertfordshire.gov.uk with the reference “Watford 20mph”.
The council news item Consultation on school admissions arrangements for 2028/29 says the consultation on proposed changes for community and voluntary controlled schools is now open. The page did not show a closing date in the text retrieved this morning, so that date is not stated here.
Council and planning source routes are on records and checks. Today’s linked local reports are on today’s edition.
